Last Sunday I had the pleasure of introducing Tibetan Singing Bowl Sound Mediation to 190 teenagers at the Team Spirit 2012 retreat located at Bryant College.  The event was held by the MaDD of RI.  The theme for the day was stress relief through sound.  Here are some photos of the event.

They learned about brain balance (hemispheric synchronicity).  They also heard how sound can reboot a stress mind into balance through a cool thing called "following frequency response."  Yes, I even demonstrated how sounds of rattling can relieve a stressed mind.

We then shared a 30 minute sound meditation through the mysterious and soothing sound of the ancient Tibetan Singing Bowls and Gong.

Many of the adult staff were surprised at how effective the Sound Meditation was for inducing a relaxation response.  They also noted how many of the group seemed to go deep into the meditation and found their zone of chill.

Thanks to all the staff and folk attending Team Spirit 2012 for a great afternoon.

In the Old Testament sonic vibrations brought down the walls of Jericho.  Here we will be working to bring down the walls of stress and blocks to our authentic self.

I will be adding a new 8.5 inch Tibetan Bowl and the 22 inch wind gong shown in the photo.

Rewiring Your Brain

Lately I have been listening to the audiocasts Brain Series put on by the National Institute of Clinical and Behavioral Medicine (www.nicabm.com). Their series reminded me of an article written by speaker, author and therapist Bill O'Hanlon, "The Brain Plasticity and Depression Connection." What follows is a heavily adapted summary of his key points along with some of my own thoughts.

Newer theories state that anxiety and depression state is caused by the lack of brain growth in the emotional section of the brain called the hippocampus. For years medicine has been based on the theory that the cause is a biochemical imbalance and deficiency in certain neurotransmitters like serotonin. What is interesting about this newer theory is the discovery of ways we can grow our brains or significantly decrease brain decline.

Our response to environment is proving to be more critical to brain growth than was previously thought twenty five years ago. "...stress, which plays a key role in triggering depression, suppresses neuro genesis, brain growth, in the hippocampus." Bill O'hanlon

So here is a very brief summary of Four Things You Can Do To Rewire Your Brain...

1. Playing or listening to music. In short musicians have more brain matter. gdc click on my blog - "Brain and Music"

2. Get up and move - movement stimulates brain growth hormone.

3. Stretch yourself mentally and learn something new.

4. Social Connections - ones absent from moaning and groaning. Social connection lights up brain circuitry that gets sluggish with depression. Important is to limit participating in worry, obsessing, complaining to no more than 10 minutes. If you can't do this under your own will power then it is time to get professional help.

Emotional Freedom Techniques is a simple yet remarkable healing system that reduces the mind/body stress that underlies disempowerment.  When we dream about our future, almost immediately obstacles will appear to tell us why that isn’t going to happen.  EFT is highly effective in eliminating resistance, self-sabotage, fears and negative beliefs.  Life Events (when we have downloaded core negative beliefs) disrupt energy flow and optimum brain function.  Meridian Tapping or EFT is one of the most effective methods for reaching personal empowerment.

This seminar, presented by Greg Carpenter, LMFT, will show you how to use Meridian Tapping and Energy Psychology to reach your most authentic and empowered self. Learn how to use EFT “while on the run” in your busy life to remove obstacles that keep you stuck. Tap away negative beliefs that tell you it isn’t safe, you are undeserving, or it isn’t possible to release your empowered self. You will learn how to easily identify and release the basic fears and limiting beliefs that keep you from being who you really are! Greg will show you exactly how to tap on your own body to release the negative charge that surrounds feelings of fear and inadequacy. You will leave being able to control and turn around your negative emotions. Your journey towards Personal Empowerment begins with this seminar!

*EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Technique. EFT is a set of therapeutic interventions and self help tools sometimes known as "tapping therapy" or "emotional acupuncture w/o the needles." EFT brings together the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, neuroscience and psychotherapy by stimulating acupressure points alongside specially worded phrases. The results are shifts in negative beliefs/thoughts, relief from physical tension and negative emotions. It is easy to learn and use on a daily basis.

My Sound Travels...
Over five years ago I rediscovered the power of sound and it has clearly expanded my mental renewal tool box. Currently, I am listening to hemi-sync music while I create this post. Brain sync music and other healing sounds are an excellent way to acknowledge negative emotional states and gently shift to a balanced brain.

I have experiemented with the sounds produced by Tibetan Singing Bowls, rattles, cd's, drums and our own vocal chords. Singing Bowls are my personal favorite. The transcendant sounds they produce have been astounding. My collection has multiplied from one bowl purchased over one year ago to twelve and still growing. The antique bowls produce harmonic and rich tones that pull you into a brain entrainment of deep relaxation.

Through these ancient methods for producing healing sounds clients have experienced deep states of relaxation, the removal of emotional blocks and a return to a less stressed - more authentic self.

In this workshop we will learn about the healing paths of sounds, experiment with group soundings and experience a meditative "sound bath" from playing multiple singing bowls. If you haven't experienced the healing sounds of the singing bowls you are in for a physical and mental treat.  Here is what Dr. R. Karnhem said about his experience.
“…often you go through Spirit to get release in the body – but the singing bowls relaxes the body and permits the deeper spiritual experience and enlightenment.”

Why Sound?
Your perceptions are negatively altered when your body and brain is “jazzed up” on excessive worry. Every anxious thought floods your brain with “worry” chemicals causing a neurological equivalent to someone yelling fire at a movie theater. This cascade of electrical and chemical responses can over time hard wire your brain to be addicted to worry and anxiety.

Psychologist David Feinstein writes, “For better or worse, your expectations release a flood of chemicals in your brain. Every sensation, emotion and passing thought causes millions of neurons to fire together, shaping your next response to whatever life presents (The Promise of Energy Psychology)”

Sound Therapy is a new name for an ancient practice. Recent brain research can explain what the healers and mystics of old knew all along. You can now re-program your brain through brain entrainment by playing different types of sounds and music. In effect, it can liberate your own brain’s inner resources to function at an optimum capacity. Sacred or healing sounds return your brain and consciousness back to a place of syncronicity and balance.

Join with us on the Feb. 3nd to “taste” different auditory delights.  Music and instuments exists that increase brain waves which correlate with energy, focus, relaxation, creativity and even a good night's sleep.
